Rotator ring damage is a very common affliction of the shoulder joint. Damage to the structure, which causes pain and instability in the joint, occurs as a result of trauma or progressive degenerative changes in the tendons and muscles of the shoulder girdle. This problem most often affects people over 40, but also young and athletic people. Both cases may be an indication for arthroscopic rotator ring repair.

Preoperative medical visit

The person who decides whether a patient qualifies for surgery is an orthopedic doctor. This takes place at the Rehasport clinic during a pre-operative visit, which should be held two weeks before the scheduled surgery. During the visit, the doctor describes the arthroscopic rotator cuff repair procedure to the patient, and then completes the necessary medical documentation. If the patient agrees to the surgery, the procedure to prepare him for the arthroscopic rotator ring repair procedure at the Rehasport clinic begins.

The next step is a consultation with the patient's medical supervisor, who informs the patient of the date, time and location of the surgery and outlines the procedure to prepare the patient for surgery. The nurse interviews the patient about any comorbidities, drug allergies and dietary preferences during the hospital stay. The nurse informs what to purchase from the pharmacy to take care of the wound to avoid possible infection, informs the patient about the prevention of thrombosis.

Laboratory tests

Approximately two weeks before the arthroscopic rotator ring repair procedure, the patient should perform laboratory tests. These are performed at one of Rehasport's designated laboratory facilities, where blood will be drawn for testing (you must be fasting) and a nasal swab for staphylococcus will be taken.

Meeting with the anesthesiologist

Before the procedure, a consultation with an anesthesiologist is recommended, for which the results of laboratory tests are necessary, while the results of the nasal swab are not. Based on these, the anesthesiologist qualifies the patient for arthroscopic rotator-ring repair.

On the day of surgery

The patient stays one night after the procedure, so it is necessary to take the necessary personal belongings to the hospital - flip-flops and pajamas with a strapless shirt, which in the case of shoulder surgery is much more comfortable when changing dressings. In accordance with the doctor's recommendations, the patient must also get an orthosis before the surgery, which can be ordered from the Rehasport store. The doctor at the pre-operative visit determines what model will be suitable for the Patient.

What is the anesthesia?

Before the arthroscopic rotator cuff repair procedure, the patient receives general anesthesia.

How long does the surgery take?

The arthroscopic rotator ring repair procedure takes about an hour.

How long does the patient stay in the hospital?

The patient stays in the hospital for one day. He comes to the hospital in the morning on an empty stomach, is operated on the same day, has a discharge the next day and goes home.

The day after arthroscopic rotator-ring repair surgery

In the morning, the first post-operative medical consultation takes place, where the orthopedist checks the patient's well-being, the condition of the limb after surgery and gives instructions for further treatment. The physiotherapist then gives the patient a postoperative exercise manual and demonstrates the performance of the first exercises.

How much release after surgery?

The length of release after arthroscopic rotator-ring repair depends on the Patient's occupation. If he has an office job, the release is issued for a period of 3 months. If the Patient has a typically physical job, he or she is given a six-month release.

Follow-up treatment after arthroscopic rotator ring repair surgery

In the package, the patient receives two free post-operative visits to the Rehasport clinic. The first one takes place two weeks after the surgery, at which the sutures are removed, the doctor looks at the wound and gives further instructions for treatment. The second visit to the attending physician, takes place six weeks after surgery. Full rehabilitation begins four weeks after surgery. On the other hand, rehabilitation of the joints not covered by the surgery begins as early as the second week, with shoulder stabilization exercises that do not involve the operated shoulder in any way. Receiving rehabilitation in a Rehasport wedge is very important, because at any time the physiotherapist, can consult the patient's medical case with the doctor and immediately get the necessary consultation without having to make an additional appointment.

How long does one wear the orthosis?

After arthroscopic rotator-ring repair, an orthosis must be used, which a physiotherapist helps to put on correctly the first time. The duration of use of the orthosis is determined by the attending orthopedist, usually about 4 weeks.
